Nightmares On Wax – Smokers Delight

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

Sometimes in electronically based music productions, theres a tendency to overproduce everything.
Especially music where the mainpart of the production is electronic, has a tendency to be crammed full with ideas and smart techniques.
I think, that if you reach that point in your production, where there is something lacking, and you dont know what it is, you should just leave it as it is for a week, and then return with fresh ears and ideas. This is just my workaround mind you.
Its not easy, if you are really anxious to get it done and if you have a deadline, but believe me, in my opinion there is a much better chance of a good result, if you give it time to breathe.
Ofcourse there is alsways the risk that you find out that it just doesnt work at all, and you have to ditch it entirely. But thats still better than some crap mix ending up on an album or in some other kind of publicaly available production. I tried it, and I am not goona say where its at…hehe. It was sound track work I can reveal that much.
Anyways, this struck me when i listened to Nightmares On Wax “Smokers Delight”, which is a brilliant example of a less is more production technique. Some of the tracks anyway.
Just listens now to the track “Stars”. Its a long track, 7 minutes, and there is not much going on.
But it diesnt matter, because the right mood is established and the elements are there and they work perfectly together. Its ofcourse very much a slow track like this, that the “less is more technique” can be applied with succes to.
On the other hand, slow tracks make room for much more details to be permitted, the risk of plastering it over with all sorts of unnessacary stuff is very much there. This doesnt happen here though.
Looping is great, could be some kind of mantra for this chill out downbeat sample based music from Nightmares On Wax. It almost puts you in a trance with its long meditative grooves eating its way in and out of your attention span in the nicest way.
Perfect for a nice dreamy afternoon at the beach. Go get the album I say. Its worth every dime.

New chillout downbeat tunes from Ganga and Petrol

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

So I guess its time for some new writings about my chilll out downbeat tunes.

I had a bit of a rough month, finishing off some film projects and getting my latest tracks ready. That means which ones goes on the album and which ones

stays behind in the dark. Its tough decisions, and it takes so much time listening again and again and then making a new mix and then suddenly getting new ideas so you have to start all over again.

I want the album out in January – or at least I want to hold a finished master in my hand in January. That should be possible.

Also been working on my DJ set which is getting more and more fun. I am finding lots of stuff I can play around with when I DJ with my own tracks also. I use Ableton LIve for that – great fun.

Also working on new tracks with Daniel Masson and playing gigs with my new secret band (which is not my band by the way).

Releasing new Petrol EP called “Multipassion”. Just finished it a week or two ago and it should be up for download in a few weeks. My two collaborators on this project is Helle Chirholm and Steen Kyed on vocals and guitar. Steen and me producing.

Then I am making a new website for Flinc Music which should be up and running some time into the new year. That’s hard work.

So yes lots of stuff happening.

Making a living from music

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

Not so long ago, I was talking to a guy I met about working as a musician in Denmark and he was complaining that it is so hard (it’s a small country). I could totally agree with that, because it is very hard to make a living of only playing gigs.

Its very normal that very experienced and skilled musicians with impressive carriers have day jobs as dentists, music teachers, carpenters or whatever.

He has worked in many parts of the world as a musician, but only here in Copenhagen, Denmark was he forced to work as a waiter to make ends meet.

All this comes at no surprise to me.

But then he said something that I think needs some consideration.

He said that that “only the ones who play bad music can make a living in this country”.

You can argue that he may be right, and you can argue that he is just a bitter musician wannabe.

Well maybe there is some truth in both arguments.

Long ago – maybe 10-12 years – I saw this interview with Phil Collins who was talking about his live tour and all the rehearsals and logistics involved in this massive tour.

He was talking about a musician and referred to him as “a professional” – and then just when he said it, he continued “I know it sounds bad – like this guy is a machine and only works for money”.

Apparently he preferred to work with people who were not “professionals”, because they often had their heart so much more into it, than the bread and butter musician who works on the clock and could just as well be a busdriver or whatever . I doubt there is so many of them really.

Anyways, at that time (15 years agomybe) it puts things in perspective for me.

I have always persued a professional career in music, and I actually make my living out of playing, composing and producing in many different setups.

That doesn’t make me a bad artist I think. I just do what I like, and I am very happy to be able to work with stuff that I love the most – music. Be it chillout, downbeat, electronic punkrock or weird improvising to silentmovies.

Ofcourse its not  fun all the time. There is always office stuff and things that are boring that just needs to be done and boring deadlines and so on,  but this is the routine that you cant avoid I think.

Its life, when you have to work to make money.

New track with Daniel Masson

Monday, October 27th, 2008

I went to Paris with my girlfriend this summer and visited Daniel Masson in his country house just outside of Paris. We were supposed to be working together on another project, but we ended up starting a new collaboration instead.

Out of this visit now emerges a new track called “Synchronize me”.

A little song about … well yes synchronization of the small and the big. The inside and the outside playing together in its own crazy way. The universe is toying with us and we pretend we don’t know – we do not want to know. Its really a love song – sort of anyway.

Its an electronic track, but with many acoustic elements in it still. I think its appropriate to say thats its an electronic production with many acoustic instruments.

Influences are most definitely Pink Floyd, but it has a soft electronic sound to it – clean chill out/downbet (no its not a decease) you could call it. As opposed to dubby and dirty.

Anyway its a new collaboration between Daniel Masson and I, and we call it  - not so surprisingly – “Ganga and Daniel Masson”. More tracks to come for sure, but this one track is a good start I think.

Its a downbeat, chill out track , but thats more referring to the sound and the mood really, because its 120 bpm, so its not the classic chill tempo.

Its a chill out track reaching back for some old bass and guitar stuff played by Daniel Mason and messed up one late night/early morning between the two of us in his studio. He played it at the occasion I should point out.

Production has been under way for quite some time, but now its here. It has arrived from that hidden place in the universe from where these things emerge. Or maybe its just from within  our brains or both our brains or maybe it just comes from the meeting of two personalities in one output…who knows?

I am looking forward to see where the next tracks are going. In the meantime you can listen to the track in my player on www.myspace.com/gangalounge and also on www.ilike.com/artist/ganga

In the train – ONLY in the train

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

Sunday morning. Indian summer day ahead. I am on the way out of Copenhagen. I am tired. I am looking at the still long shadows from the early sun.

I am in the train. Car gave up on me yesterday, so I am in the train with my laptop.

In the train. In the train.

Like any other office clerk on the way to work.

The landscape rolls by me very quickly while I am listening to Mike Sheridans new CD “I syv sind”. Seems like a very nice atmosphere is building up in these tracks.

The sounds are blending beautifully with the impersonal sounds and messages  from the train – like it was meant to be a mixture of Mike Sheridans dubby chilled sounds and the metal sounds and boring voices coming from the train.

Now we are driving just beside the motorway. The cars are floating along nicely, like were they controlled from the same remote. And maybe they are – maybe we all are.

That would be a new and funny conspiracy strategy – everyone and everything in this world is triggered by one – just one – remote.

The power that controls it is beyond black matter, black holes, infinity theories, relativity theories and  any – however sophisticated – forms of communication and language.

The most fantastic works of art and literature and music is like simple first grade math compared to this remote control.. controller. The mother of all controllers.

Controller, yes that is the word.

That would be some theory to write and talk about. People would spend days and months of their life figuring out how someone can keep control of everything like this. And they will try and find all the evidence they can to prove their paranoid theory.  crazy. It’s an evil path.

Maybe better to spend time on being present in what it is you are doing right now. Like being in the train and just being there, not writing your blog. Hmm.

That be the dishes or the nine o´clock news or the loop on your computer screen or the music in your head or the pain in your heart or the sensation you have of the newly cut grass you are lying on.

Anyway, I am off again. – riding the train. Riding the train, riding.

Claire Ross-Brown “Complexity” – release 30th sept.

Monday, September 15th, 2008

I know I am repeating myself a little, but I am just thrilled about this new album with danish/british singer Claire Ross-Brown that we are releasing tuesday the 30th sept.

The first single was released last year – before I was involved in the projekt – and is called two sisters. Its produced by Berry Sode and written by Claire and Berry. You can watch the video here.

The next video is called “Assassin” and is very near to being finished. We hope to premiere it on the release the 30th sept. This track I produced. Its almost a bit James Bond like in the atmosphere.

All lyrics on the album is by Claire and they are very personal writings.

The album is very electronic sounding, but still with lots of acoustic instruments also. I would say definitely some influence from Massive Attack and maybe Everything But The Girl.

One track is produced by Gauzz.

Some tracks are actually chill out like in their calmness and overall its a downtempo album I would say – electronic downtempo with a little psychedelic dreamness inbetween.

Check out more on Claire here.
