Here is a funny cover version of an Underworld track called “Always loved a film”.

Download the track here:

You know that if King Creosote’s covering Underworld it’s gonna be like “feeling morose with strangers in a chill-out room” than “hovering over my  head looking down at myself screaming with unbridled joy”.  To be fair to Kenny Anderson, his version of “Always Loved A Film” bomps along lively enough, sounding like Hot Chip might if  their electricity was confiscated. Underworld by the way have a new single called “Bird 1″ out November 22.

The single is accompanied by a video directed by Dylan Kendle. It employs time-lapse photography to a lovely and intriguing effect. The film is Kendle’s first video for over ten years, and is in part inspired by an unexpected event that took place at his mother’s house. “There was a line [in the song], ‘there is one bird in my house’, that reminded me of an old incident at my Mum’s,” he explains. “A bird got into the dining room and smashed all of the china on the shelves. Everything was so calm before and SO different afterwards, but for several minutes there was an explosion of colour and the room just came to life as the pieces flew.”

Stereolab – tidings of new recordings from the french

In 2007 Stereolab reconvened at  their studio Instant Zero in Bordeaux to record 32  new songs which would become two very distinct albums – 2008’s Chemical Chords and then their new release, Not Music. Although on a self-imposed hiatus, ‘Not Music’ is a eery rich and overflowing palette, readily able to blur the gulf between Os Mutantes and then the BBC Radiophonic Orchestra; merge Krzysztof Komeda with Lou Reeds Velvet Underground, Francoise Hardy with Neu! and Burt Bacharach with …. eh… Esquivel. A super-deluxe blend, in other words, with different ingredients plucked assiduously from pop’s coolest outposts: 50’s lounge pop, Rive Gauche chanson, Brazilian tropicalia and North American art rock and  also some Krautrock.  Somehow they distil these apparently incongruent components into their  own strange and beautiful mixture.

The Temper Trap

Monday, November 29th, 2010

Are you a fan of downbeat music, chill out and downtempo grooves? My name is Christian Ronn and I’ve released over 4 albums of downbeat and chill out music under the artist name Ganga, while touring and performing internationally and collaborating with other artists in electronic, funk and world music genres. I am blogging regularly on the free chill out music blog, reviewing, recommending and showcasing new chilled beats and tracks from around the world. ___________________________________________________________________________
When The Temper Trap play live, it’s blinding. From the first note to the frenzied climax to the final crash –  you’re getting lost and you’re loving it. The band is like a pulsating, beating heart that bucks and swells through flawless melodies, crushing rock surges and pure anthemic revelry as singer Dougy Mandagi’s voice soars, coils and skates inside the lush instrumentation and throbbing beats – his eyes closed, and fists clenched. He’s under his own magic spell, and you will be too.

This is what the pressoffice say about The Temper Trap.  Vocalist/songwriter Dougy Mandagi drew life from music at a very early age. His father, a  country music fan and guitarist, introduced him to artists like Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash, and he grew up playing in bands and singing in the church choir with his uncle, a classical guitarist, and his aunt who was a pianist. The big musical influence evolved and grew with Dougy as he moved from island to island in Indonesia, then to Hawaii, and finally to Melbourne, where he hit the streets as a busker – sketching portraits for $25 a piece, and singing songs for spare change.

Some years later, Dougy was working at the same clothing store as the drummer  Toby Dundas. The two decided to start a new band. In need of a bassist, Dougy asked an old friend who worked a few doors down, Johnny Aherne, who had never really played the bass but was keen to learn – and the two of them developed a brotherly friendship. The trio practiced like crazy, and with the  addition of guitarist Lorenzo Sillitto, a childhood skater friend of Toby’s, things started to come together – and The Temper Trap was born right there.

The band quickly began making the rounds on Melbourne’s indie circuit, and after a very impressive set at the 2006 Laneway Festival, things started happening. U.K. producer Jim Abbiss (The Arctic Monkeys, Bjork, Adele, Kasabian, U.N.K.L.E),  traveled to Melbourne to record The Temper Trap’s debut album. Ahead of its release, the band relocated to East London, where they immediately charmed the critics.
And when you hear their album Conditions, it’s easy to see why. The album is a glorious and dynamic ride through uncharted musical territory, careening elegantly through the disparate musical reference points and artistic sensibilities of four very different people – you can hear Lorenzo’s love of  Motown, Toby’s ear for indie and electronica, Johnny’s affection for modern pop-rock like Weezer and The Flaming Lips and Dougy’s fondness of  everything from U2 to Massive Attack, Katy Perry to Bob Marley, and Radiohead to Arcade Fire. Album opener “Love Lost” alternates soulful, R&B vocals with soaring washes of sound; “Down River” delivers a  rally cry you can’t help but scream along to; and songs like “Soldier On”  weave around Dougy’s ethereal falsetto with unparalleled grace. The heart of the album is its first single, “Sweet Disposition” which is an epic ride, throbbing amid Dougy’s feverish, other-worldly voice.

Zagar from Hungary makes great noise.

Friday, May 7th, 2010

Zagar from Hungary merges funky Rhodes, physcedelic rock, electro, opera
and electronica into their own steaming meltingpot.
Its quite unique and refreshing – I love those rhodes themes and rock drums, but also the spacier passages are very good. There is even a hint of U2 in there – The Edge on a funky electronic tip so to say. Check it out here.

As part of the burgeoning Eastern European electronica scene, Hungarian band Zagar started out as three-fifth of the Yonderboi Quintet. After a few years and a lot of critical success, they round out a new group lead by the keyboardist Balazs Zsager. The newer sound somewhat more experimental and tough much of the aesthetic is complementary. After a hugely successful debut album, Local Broadcast, the band shifted into some soundtrack territory. They has branched into further soundtrack scoring opportunities, most notably in the American CSI series. They were nominated for the Best Local Act in the MTV Music Awards 2009. The band performs live as a 5 piece featuring guest vocalist. Zagar were also supporting Depeche Mode at the Budapest leg of the Tour of the Universe 2009. This summer they have gigs in Germany, Austria, Russia, Finland and Czech Republic.

On their latest album they mix psychedelic rock, dub and hip-hop with cosmic electronic tunes while sometimes using church choir elements and quotes from movies to merge the past and the future in a surrealistic way. The concept of the album is a kind of exodus from the stereotypes of cosmopolitan urban living, delving into the mysteries of the 21st Century Man.
A couple of tracks featuring George Ligeti – Alan McGee’s favourite singer. The single hit “Wings of Love”, features The Underground Divas – six Hungarian independent singers – and earned heavy radio airplay and secured a no1. spot on MTV’s video chart in Hungary.
They actually won the second prize in the International Songwriting Competition (judged by Tom Waits, Robert Smith, Nelly Furtado, Tiesto).

Riva Starr – perfect winter chill out

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Its this time of year where my home country is cold like the darkest corner in your freezer.

Everything is hard and cold and when the sun is out it looks as though it shouldn’t have left home today. In bed is the best place to be, chilling with some nice hot coco or something.

Some say there is a special nordic sound, a tone, melancholic in its ground substance.

Whether this is true or not I don’t know.

All I know is that melancholy is definitely a state of mind familiar to many Nordic people this time of year.

In Copenhagen we are lucky to have some daylight even when the days are their shortest, but all the way up in Norway where icebears and reindeers cruise the streets of every middle sized city, people litteraly go crazy this time of year when there is so little sunlight. Alaska should also be a tough place for humans in the winter.

Anyway the point is, its dark and cold and the best place to be is in bed.

I am not sure where, but somehow I stumbled over this track, that is almost perfect for this kind of weather.

Its called “Fanfar One” and is by Riva StarrRiva Starr who should be familiar to anyone into modern house music.

He is a talented producer of many music styles and has been around for a little over a decade

Producing and writing in many different genres under a lot of different names.

With a love of reinventing  music that inspires him, Stef created the term “Snatch!” as his way of describing his bootleg remix style of snatching/pick pocketing other music styles for his own. It’s also a play of words with the type of folk/Balkan/rock music he draws a lot of his  inspiration from, often carrying that gypsy spirit.

Having given away a number of widely praised and blogged “Snatch” mixes online (his recent remix of ‘The End’ by The Doors has well over 10,000 downloads on Discobelle alone), it wasn’t too long before some of these found their way into the DJ sets of some of the biggest names on the circuit.

I recommend “Fanfar One” to anyone blinded by winter or just life itself.

There is a Spanish Central Europevibe vibe to it, and its bound to get your spirits up a little.

So put your legs up, close your eyes and chill to this track.

State of resonance – no chill out and downbeat this time

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

Those of you waiting for news about some hot new crisp chilled downtempo for your Chill out collection, will have to endure a wait until some other writing from this channel. This time its about a trance release.
If you like me, remember the late eighties and start nineties where electronic music was in its glorious days where technology was fairly new, and electronic artists was popping up all the time from every hole in ground it seemed – if you remember these raving days – or just likes this kind of music in general – chances are good that you will like this release from French electronic traveller Atyss.
Even though he is a bit “faster” so to say – than the big ones in those days – Orb, Underworld, Eat Static.
“State of resonance” is released on Sonic Motion Records and I can tell you that if you liked/like trance and acid house, you wont be disappointed.
Atyss has the seal of approval from the crowds on dance floors across the globe and also this time takes you on a journey of trepidation and chaotic bliss, with ominous beats, uplifting bass and distorted leads. With melodies to fill a silence with ethereal yet devilish rhythm, leaving you in a transfixed state of resonance. (press notes)
Nine original tracks and a few tracks featuring other luminairies from that scene, such as: Tim Schuldt, Killer Buds, Triskell, Lazy Lyzard.
Enjoy!

Claire Ross-Brown “Complexity” – release 30th sept.

Monday, September 15th, 2008

I know I am repeating myself a little, but I am just thrilled about this new album with danish/british singer Claire Ross-Brown that we are releasing tuesday the 30th sept.

The first single was released last year – before I was involved in the projekt – and is called two sisters. Its produced by Berry Sode and written by Claire and Berry. You can watch the video here.

The next video is called “Assassin” and is very near to being finished. We hope to premiere it on the release the 30th sept. This track I produced. Its almost a bit James Bond like in the atmosphere.

All lyrics on the album is by Claire and they are very personal writings.

The album is very electronic sounding, but still with lots of acoustic instruments also. I would say definitely some influence from Massive Attack and maybe Everything But The Girl.

One track is produced by Gauzz.

Some tracks are actually chill out like in their calmness and overall its a downtempo album I would say – electronic downtempo with a little psychedelic dreamness inbetween.

Check out more on Claire here.
